About Golden Doodles

Golden Doodles are a cross between Poodles and Golden Retrievers. They are bred from pure-bred dogs, so are 50-50 of each, to produce more robust genes. Adult goldendoodles have 4-6 inch hair, the curlier, the less they shed. Like golden retrievers, they are energetic and affectionate. They like to put their mouths everywhere, and must be trained well as puppies.

Golden doodles are often used and recommended for therapy dogs- therapy dogs must be gentle, affectionate, good with children, and good with other dogs and other pets. They are intended to be petted, as they are kept for comfort, rather than as service animals (e.g. seeing eye dogs). Therapy dogs don’t wear vests, unlike service dogs, because it would make it harder to pet them.

Labradoodles are similar, but a cross between labradors and golden retrievers. They have different personalities, loyal, and friendly, but respectful of your personal space. They are stronger and have thicker necks, and their coat is different than that of a goldendoodle. Labradoodles have short, wavy hair- short hair from labs, and wavyness from the poodles. The labradoodle was originally bred in Australia as an allergy sensitive dog.

The Australian Labradoodle is a specific breed recognized by the American Kennel Club. The Labradoodle was first bred in Australia, and the AKC Australian Labradoodle programs hearken back to this, certifying that dogs claiming to be of this heritage are as promoted. They have hybridized back in a line of poodle to correct for some issues with the dog’s coat.
